From the Mail Bag: Is My Dog Lonely

Question: My dog is going to be 7 or 8 years old. The only dog she got along with died and she does not even like the two neighbors' dogs. What if none of this works and it is lonely all its life.

Will dogs who don't get along with other dogs get along with puppies easier than adult dogs?

I'm very sorry about your dog's passing. It's common that we sometimes project our own feelings onto our dogs.  If we want to be around people, we might feel like our dog wants to be around other dogs. But many dogs would be happy in the company of humans only.  If your dog seems to be fine without other dogs, then I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Just spend extra time with him. Maybe come  up with some things you can do together.  Maybe an online training class (so he doesn't have to be around other dogs)

If you work long hours and your dog is alone a lot, consider hiring a reputable pet sitter (only if your dog likes strange humans)

Do adults get along with puppies?  It depends on the dog. Some adult dogs don't like the energy of a baby puppy. Some dog are puppy tolerant but it doesn't mean they enjoy having a puppy around. And some dogs like puppies.

If you decide to get another dog, I suggest hiring a skilled force free professional to help you with slow introductions
